Our Commitment to the Environment

SCHOTT continues to systematically extend its ecological commitment by introducing environmentally-friendly products and technologies. Examples include not only SCHOTT Solar receivers for solar thermal parabolic through power plants and photovoltaic systems for generating alternative types of energy, but also eco-friendly CERAN Supermea® and CERAN Hightrans® eco glass-ceramic that are manufactured without using the metals arsenic and antimony as additives.

In the areas of product development and manufacturing, we work hard to minimize the impact of these activities on the environment and constantly improve protection of the environment. In order to do so, we introduced an environmental management system at the global level that is based on the international standard for environmental management ISO 14001.

The Principles for Safety, Security, Health and Environment that were formulated by our corporate management serve as guiding principles for all of our employees on how to act each day. SCHOTT has already received several awards for its environmental commitment, including the German Innovation Award 2010.

Reduce consumption of energy and resources

Using less energy and lowering our consumption of resources will always be an important focus of what we do. SCHOTT continues to lower its specific energy requirement of melted glass by making a host of improvements to process sequences and using pure oxygen for firing. This will result in a significant reduction in emissions of nitrogen oxides and CO² that harm our environment. DIN EN 16001 compliance is a component of our environmental policy.

Environmentally-friendly products

At SCHOTT we continually strive to strengthen our ecological commitment by expanding our offerings of environmentally-friendly glasses.

Glasses and components from SCHOTT Solar, including solar receivers for solar thermal power plants that are to be used in the future as the core technology in the Desertec project, are designed to generate alternative energy. This gigantic project calls for large-scale solar thermal power plants to be built in the desert regions of Africa and Arabia that will also supply Europe with power. Solar receivers from SCHOTT Solar represent the core technology of this project.
